Florence travel guide

Florence rewards a plan with fewer major interiors and more time between them. Decide which collection or building is your priority before filling every morning with tickets. Our suggested two-day structure pairs one reserved cultural visit with nearby streets, food, and a river crossing. A third day can be used for another collection or a separate excursion, rather than squeezing both into the same afternoon.

Planning your time in Florence

By Outstation · Updated

A suggested route

Use these as separate blocks, then adapt them to your dates and interests. They are planning suggestions, not confirmed bookings.

  1. One museum, then the center

Use a confirmed Uffizi or Accademia reservation as your anchor. Follow it with the cathedral area and central streets at a comfortable pace. Choose the museum for its collection, not because an itinerary says both are compulsory.

  2. Across the Arno

Make the river crossing the start of an Oltrarno day. Choose a palace or garden visit if it fits your interests, then leave room for the neighborhood. Treat a climb to a viewpoint as real walking time rather than a five-minute stop.

  3. An optional extra day

Keep an additional museum or a trip outside Florence on its own day. A rail excursion needs station access, return travel, and a meal plan. If the weather changes, a local indoor visit may be a more useful fallback than a distant destination.

Choose a base

Compare the historic center with an Oltrarno base across the river. The center can suit a first visit focused on museums; Oltrarno can suit a plan built around its neighborhoods and workshops. If arriving by rail, calculate the walk from Santa Maria Novella with luggage and check whether the accommodation has stairs or vehicle-access restrictions.

The tradeoff

A museum-heavy schedule and a slow neighborhood visit use time differently. One long gallery visit can be more satisfying than three hurried admissions. If your group has mixed interests, agree on a shared anchor and leave a free block for separate walks or a café break.

Before you book

  • Book through the museum's official channel and verify closure days for your travel dates.
  • Check which parts of a cathedral, palace, or garden your ticket includes.
  • Confirm luggage storage and check-in before planning a timed visit on arrival day.
