Italy · Travel guide
Build a Rome itinerary around the visits that need a reservation, then fit the streets and squares around them. A museum entry time is an anchor; a fountain or neighborhood walk is more flexible. For a first visit, our suggested split is ancient Rome, the historic center, and the Vatican side of the river. This keeps each day focused and leaves room for meals rather than turning the city into a checklist.
By Outstation · Updated
Use these as separate blocks, then adapt them to your dates and interests. They are planning suggestions, not confirmed bookings.
Start with your confirmed Colosseum entry, then allow a substantial block for the Forum and Palatine. Keep the evening flexible around Monti. Adding a second major museum to this day is a choice to shorten the archaeological visit.
Group the Pantheon area, Piazza Navona, and Trevi into a walking day, with a meal break between them. Treat interiors as separate visits with their own entry rules, rather than assuming every stop is a quick outdoor photo.
If the Vatican Museums matter to you, organize the day around that booking and leave space for security queues. Use the river area for a flexible later walk. St Peter's Basilica and the museums are distinct visits; check each operator's instructions.
Choose a base by the journey you will repeat each day. If your priority is walking between central sights, compare accommodation around the historic center. If you have an early train or several rail journeys, compare the walk to Termini. Check the actual street and entrance on the map; a neighborhood label alone does not tell you how convenient a hotel is.
With only two full days, choose between a substantial Vatican visit and a slower historic-center day. Trying to compress all three themes often removes the unplanned time that makes the trip enjoyable. Your arrival afternoon is best used for a short local walk and checking the next day's route.
