Italy · Travel guide
Plan Positano around access as much as scenery. Accommodation on the hillside, a beach visit, and a boat departure can involve different arrival points and a meaningful walk between them. Our suggested approach is to settle into one base, keep a local day, and add one coastal outing if the transport works. Avoid promising yourself a string of towns before checking how you will get back.

Use these as separate blocks, then adapt them to your dates and interests. They are planning suggestions, not confirmed bookings.
Use the first afternoon for check-in, finding the route to the beach, and a nearby meal. Keep a substantial gap after a train or airport transfer. Do not make a boat departure depend on a tight connection from outside town.
Choose a beach block or a neighborhood walk as your main activity. Keep lunch close to that choice instead of repeatedly climbing between the accommodation and waterfront. Allow time to return and change before an evening reservation.
If a ferry operates for your dates, choose one destination and check both directions before booking anything else. Keep an alternative local day ready. A hiking outing is a different kind of day and needs its own trail and access checks.
Ask the accommodation for the route from your actual arrival point, including stairs and luggage assistance. A sea view and easy access are separate preferences. A lower location may make beach or pier visits easier; a higher one may suit the view you want. Verify the route directly if steps or steep walks are a concern.
Staying overnight gives you more freedom around a local morning or evening, while a day visit avoids another accommodation change. Compare the complete transfer and luggage burden, not only the nightly rate. For a short Italy trip, adding the coast can consume a large part of a day in each direction.
